Description: It is a mineral formed by calcium carbonate (Co3Ca) crystallized in the orthorhombic system unlike calcite which, with the same composition, does so in the trigonal system, for this reason it was the first case of mineral polymorphism studied. The name is due to the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner, who in 1788 described it for the first time in Molina de Aragón, believing that it was found in Aragonese lands. Since then, it has been known by this name in all countries of the world.
It is a mineral of sedimentary origin that appears among the clays and gypsum of the upper Triassic (Keuper facies) of the region.
Its origin is related to the rise of thermal waters with calcium in solution and its subsequent precipitation on the surface.
It is considered one of the most representative Spanish minerals and is therefore the symbol of the Spanish Mineralogy Society.
Where to find them: About 2 km. Leaving Molina de Aragón on the GU-958 highway towards Ventosa and in the town of Cobeta, at stop 3 of georoute 3 of the Alto Tajo Natural Park.
Observations: The use of mechanical means for its collection and commercial use is prohibited, and manual collection of the soil surface for personal collection is permitted.
