GREEK CASTLES

One and a half kilometers south of the town of Checa (Guadalajara), Castil de Griegos is located, an Iron Age fort, built on the top of a high hill of great strategic value, which controlled the small valley along the which runs through the Genitoris stream, a tributary of the Cabrillas river.

This Celtiberian town is located next to an important natural communication route used since Prehistory, which allows the transit of the Alto Tajo in a north-south direction through this mountain area of the Universal Mountains.

Its uniqueness is given by the existence of two adjacent and independent walled enclosures, highlighting a complex defensive system composed of towers, moats and walls, designed to safeguard its inhabitants and the craft activities they carried out.

Both the monumentality of its defenses and the functionality of the town make Castil de Griegos a reference for Celtiberian culture in the Alto Tajo, from its formative stages in the 8th century BC, to the conquest of these territories by Rome.
At the foot of Castil de Griegos, at the bottom of the valley, is the Puente de la Sierra necropolis, the place where its people were buried, following the funerary rite of cremation.
