Creeping juniper forests of Alustante-Tordesilos
Very special plant formations in the high moors

Name: Alustante Creeping Sabinares – Tordesilos.
Province: Guadalajara.
Extension: 7,376 ha.
Municipal Terms: Adobes, Alustante, Orea, Tordesilos.
Characteristic habitat: creeping juniper forests, oro-Mediterranean heaths and low paramera scrub. Calcareous alpine meadows. Endemic Mediterranean forests of Juniperus sp. Holm oak forests. Oak groves (rebolles and gall oaks).
Outstanding values and most representative and unique species: relict formations of creeping juniper forest (Juniperus sabina).
Other floristic species of interest: Rosa sicula, Rosa pimpinellifolia, Ribes uva-crispa, Astragalus sempervirens. Fauna of a steppe nature (alaudids) and forest (passerines), and presence of rock raptors such as Egyptian vultures and griffon vultures.
Vulnerability and possible threats: effects on the landscape and flora due to the installation of new energy infrastructure (wind farms), mining exploitation, afforestation of part of the surface and due to the construction or expansion of roads and other infrastructures that require large earthworks. Others protection figures: the creeping juniper forest is a special protection habitat in Castilla-La Mancha.
Recommended time of visit and other recommendations: all year round. The LIC is located very close to the Alto Tajo Natural Park.
