This Geopark has an exceptional geological record. Most of it is located on a plateau area dominated by altitudes of more than 1,100 meters above sea level. The extensive network of valleys and gorges fit over the rock layers, revealing a large number of geological strata in which a very extensive record of the history of the Earth appears for 450 million years, collecting the main events of the periods, Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. These sites appear in excellent access and conservation conditions, which makes them especially useful for scientific, educational and geotourism use. 

On September 22, 2014, during the VI International Geoparks Conference held at the Stone Hammer Geopark in the city of Saint John in the state of New Brunswick, Canada, the Comarca de Molina-Alto Tajo Geopark received credentials as a full member of the European Network (EGN-European Geoparks Network) and the Global Geoparks Network (GGN-Global Geopark Network). In 2015, it was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark within the International Earth Sciences and Geoparks Program.
