Their fossilization occurred due to a Hawaiian-type volcanic eruption, fissured and non-explosive, which covered them with a mantle of lava and pyroclasts. Its importance is due to several characteristics:

-They are some of the oldest specimens of fossil trunks in the world. They lived on a rocky substrate from the Lower Paleozoic and the volcanic eruption that buried them while they were alive occurred in the Upper Paleozoic 290 million years ago. This makes them older than other fossilized trunks such as those on the Island of Lesbos in Greece or the Arizona Painted Forest in the United States.

-They are in a living position, that is, their roots can be seen penetrating the substrate as they were arranged while the specimen was alive. This circumstance is exceptional because in most of the other sites, the trunks have been felled and transported before fossilizing and provides a large amount of information about the characteristics of these plants as well as the environment in which they developed.

-Exceptional conservation of the details of its fabrics. The rapid burial in volcanic material, together with the subsequent circulation of fluids saturated in silica at a certain temperature, enabled a silicification process in which the plant tissue was replaced by silica mineral, preserving its microscopic details, which gives it enormous value for the study of these ancient plants.

How to get: The Sierra de Aragoncillo is a mountainous alignment that runs in an east-west direction in the central area of the Molina Region.

Observations: The plundering suffered by these fossils for decades has reduced their number to the point of their almost disappearance, which is why it is extremely important to protect the few that remain.

Son unos de los fósiles más relevantes a nivel internacional que posee la Comarca de Molina, su fosilización se produjo a causa de una erupción volcánica de tipo Hawaiano, fisural […]

[441,443
556
post-6495","citadela-item","type-citadela-item","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","citadela-item-category-geositios","citadela-item-category-ligs","citadela-item-location-aragoncillo
["GET
